surreal drawing of mother-in-law

sketch by Lon Levin

I have to say I am disturbed and compelled by this sketch at the same time. But it immediately said mother-in-law to me. Although I have had two MIL’s and both were very nice and looked nothing like this. What I like about sketching like this is the freedom to create the image for the image’s sake and not try to draw something or control the image. I highly suggest any artist doing this especially illustrators who more often than not working within the parameters of a project and cannot exercise such freedom. It has done wonders for me to discover small marks and ways of sketching I might not have discovered otherwise which only proves the old adage “You can always learn something new”
